World War I

Badwell Ash with Poppy

Those who served

51 men from Badwell Ash signed up to fight in the First World War, and are listed on the Roll of Service in St Mary's Church (see below). The population of Badwell Ash at the time was about 350. Read about the Dead by clicking on their names below or left. Read about the Survivors here.

The Dead

In 2014, to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of WW1, plaques naming those from Badwell Ash who gave their lives in war were placed at the bottom of the new village sign.

church war window croppedPreviously, instead of erecting a war memorial, Badwell Ash dedicated a stained glass window in the church to their dead. St. George (Patron Saint of England) and St. Michael (Patron Saint of the military) are depicted on either side of Christ on the cross. St. John is shown kneeling behind the cross, and below is the text from John 15:13 ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.'

Two brass plaques below the window list the fallen in both World Wars. The following table shows the names of the dead and their regiments as shown on the World War One plaque, which sometimes differ from census/military records.

Click on a name to find out more about them. Research in 2014 shows that George Morley, who was born in Badwell Ash, also lost his life in the war. He had moved away from the village and is not listed on the Badwell Ash plaque or the Roll of Service.

With thanks to Tony Pringle who researched the military histories of these men.

roll of service top small   roll of service by organ smallHanging in the church is a Roll of Service which lists all the men from Badwell Ash and the neighbouring village of Hunston who went to the Great War. Below is the list of the men from Badwell Ash in the order, and as written on the Roll, with the exception of the explanations in italics which are added.

Some war information about these men is given here. Please note that some of the information on the Roll does not tally with recent research by Donia Stick about these men. It is not possible to put all the new research about these men onto this website. For further information about any of these men, please email us.

A small black cross is stamped beside the names of the dead.

20 men from Hunston are also listed on the Roll, with 5 of those listed as dead, but these men are not included in the following table.
